New Director of Racing at Sam Houston Race Park

Sam Houston Race Park has appointed Bart Lang, an experienced figure in the racing industry, as its new Director of Racing. Lang will manage racing operations not only at Sam Houston Race Park but also at Retama Park in Selma, Texas, and Zia Park in Hobbs, New Mexico, all owned by Penn National Gaming, Inc. Hailing from Timonium, Maryland, Lang began his career at Bonita Farm, gaining valuable knowledge in horse care and training. He has held various roles in racing offices at Oaklawn Park, Arlington Park, and Hawthorne, and was the inaugural racing secretary at Lone Star Park, overseeing operations until May 2020. Most recently, he worked as the stakes coordinator at Oaklawn Park. At 53, Lang is set to start his role on May 16 and expressed enthusiasm about joining the team, highlighting his extensive experience in the Texas racing scene and familiarity with the local horsemen and women. He succeeds James C. Leatherman, who has moved to a position as a Texas state steward.
